Chinese Subcultures

Subcultures are a small group of people with a distinctive set of beliefs and behaviors that differentiate them within the dominant culture of which they are a part.

In this opportunity I talking about two types of Chinese Subcultures.

The first is called 杀马特 shā mǎ tè or in english Anti Matt.

Their appearances are strange and different with the rest of population. According to Scott G, R. I. C. H. A. R. D. (2018, 9 noviembre), these people’s group wear «Dark eyeliner, black clothes, and crazy spiked dyed red, yellow, and blue hair. You might get a little scared if you bumped into a group of 杀马特 after dark.

杀马特 is one of the most popular Chinese subcultures. They typically consist of rural transplants who only had a middle school education and ended up working in urban low paying jobs at hair salons, internet cafes or restaurants. They run in gangs, meet each other in “families” on the internet.

The 杀马特 style might remind you of the “emo” trend that was popular in the early 2000s». this last sentence is so true, because emo’s group wear the same way and used their hair or make up similar. For me it is surprising because the emo’s style is a old era.

The second Subculture is called MOSUO

This culture is located in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces of China. They are a matriarchal society owing to women’s role that is the most important for them.

This is a very particular Chinese subculture because is based in the women’s power, which mans do not have active voice and they are just responsible for plowing, building, animal sacrifice, etc. The women raise children alone, and it is not cause the man are not responsible with their babies, it is because the culture is there and the tradition is that the woman are the only person who should be close the baby, in fact they do not know how is the father, inasmuch as the reproduction can be artificial or when whatever man come at the night to a women’s room and they have sexual relationship where the woman could get pregnant; they can do this act many times and with many mans and it is called «Axia». they do not get married. The woman must have children and if they are infertile they should adopt to someone. For the Mosuo the most biggest goal is to being a mother.

Experiences

China is a really big country characterized for being a reactive culture, where the population is educated in a respectful way showing to anothers Countries the importance of being disciplined in the live.

Then, if one person come to Barranquilla from China could have the unpunctual big problem that Colombian people have like an habit; this problem is really important because you show the respect that you have with the time of another person and yourself time, and for chinese people it is like an offense when they have a date with someone and the other person does not care if is unpuctual. For other hand Chinese people are really introvert, they are quiet and when they come here and interact with Colombian people they show a impressed face but still they think what will be their answer because should be correct and successful but they never wants to provocate problems, for example there are two persons, the first is called shen, he is chinese and the second one is called mauricio, he is Colombian, then shen is talking to mauricio about the flower’s color and it is red, but Mauricio says that it is white, even if shen knows that the color is red they never wants to controversy with mauricio and he gives him the reason.

Finally, Chinese people have many qualities that we can learn. In some cases for example the shen and mauricio’s history, where mauricio does not right and shen gives him the reason, I think that shen prefered lost a conversation than lost a friend and Colombian people most the time choose second part.

Comparative Cultures

China and Colombia are really beautiful countries that show their rich in different ways.

One similarity between China and Colombia are the power distant index, because both countries use the power and money to classify people and it is normal. For example, in Colombia the boss is the only one that is right and usually  his subordinates can not say him that he is taking a bad decision because it is like a offensive or a lack of respect with him. This is a complicate situation.

Other similarity is the masculinity society, because in both countries the cultures use the competitive way to success in life and give priority work even if the money is not a problem for them economy. Also when a man or woman are winners in their jobs or in their lives, then they probably would be acceptable and maybe could be too recognized by society. For example, when a man have a god job with 23 years old in a big or famous company and earn money, is easier that girl’s family accepted him in her family, but if is a man just studying with 28 years old or he decides to be an entrepreneur, maybe girl’s family could not accepted him or would be harder for him show that he is success in life.

Finally, in this aspect the cultures are very different because Colombian people is a indulgence culture, in contrast to China that their population are many restrained with their actions. For example in Colombia on holidays the young people go to parties and they arrived to their houses whatever hour they want and normally they parents do not say nothing about that, but in China it is really different, in spite of it is current on Colombia but always is not like that.

GENDER ROLES

¿Should the mans give their chairs on public transport?

In this case the woman should be neutral, because if they want to society treats them equals than mans, they should stop getting angry if there are many boys sit down on a bus and nobody stand up to give them the chair. But it is grateful for us to know that in china, the people do not think so.

¿What is the women’s role in life?

The Chinese women still try to chance the society’s brain about their capacities in laboral live, because this society still believe that they was born to be at home, birth and raise babies, besides to be a passive voice at home. The traditional achievement for Chinese women is to be married to a good provider for herself, to bear male children for his family, and hope these children will be successful. This supportive role continues to be reinforced in modern Chinese society through newspapers, television, movies, and the school system which sends the message that the women’s place in the world is to be a mother. her value is judged first by the success of her husband and then by the success of her children (Lau, S. (Ed.). (1996)). In this book we can see the real of Chinese culture where the women are treated only with two goals and that’s all, even the social network show to women like a home’s women, clean’s women, babies’s mom. This is an obsolete thought and the idea is broke with it and in this way has a better world.

¿Are Chinese women valued in marriage?

This topic is very controversial, because it is a social problematic in many places at world. The womens role in society has changed with time but nowdays is denigrate in some cases like marriage, the mans believes that they can hit her or shout her maybe because they do not made the dinner or whatever insignificant thing for them and that is unacceptable. According to Chan, K. L. (2006). » The study examines the Chinese face embedded in marital violence. Results from the analysis of male batterers showed that the stronger the faceorientation, the greater the masculine gender role stress and thus the greater the likelihood of using violence against a female partner». Understanding the chinese culture. (2008). said that «It can perhaps be most closely defined as “dignity” or “prestige”» thus they can not lose their «face» because is a offense for them. It is a little absurd, inasmuch as they had more «face» if they help her in house or if they were polite with them.

In China, an individual’s actions, whether positive or negative, reflect on the group as a whole.

Colombia and China

China is a beautiful country that shows a big growth versus other countries, so Colombia could learn about their politics and manners like they have. So, I think Colombia is in a transition with improve the verbal offensive againts mans, like in the bus, or in a line to pay in a mall. For other hand I thinks that both countries are in progress with the female abuse in marriage with womens, this fact is inacceptable in whatever place of world. finally, each country should learn about good costums of others countries; there, we can make a better world for everything.

CHINA

Stereotypes

I think that Chinese people are small, they have slanted eyes, white skin,      straight hair and dirty teeth. the women wear very very long dresses with   chopsticks in their hairs; and the mans wear with jackets, jeans and tennis.

This country is bigger and beautiful, it has big buildings and contains great gastronomic; the people are strict and methodic with everything however    they are good folks.

so, we can see all this stereotypes on movies, tv news or in the university, where we interactive with them. But there are many things in this stereotypes that robs the dignity of them because are lies, however we can have a frame of reference allowing our perception change about their culture.
